Men of Ohio Henry Fillmore Fillmore dedicated this march "To the President Warren G. Harding, and his staunch Loyalists" in 1921. Harding had played the alto horn in hometown band of Caledonia and later in Marion, Ohio. His high school popularity continued into adulthood, and he was elected to the state senate in 1898 and to the US Congress as a senator in 1912. In 1920 the "small town hero" took advantage of the American mood against the restrictions of the war years and ran a successful campaign for the nation's highest office. - Program note from Program Notes for Band
Shenandoah Frank Ticheli Ticheli writes "In my setting of Shenandoah I was inspired by the freedom and beauty of the folk melody and by the natural images evoked by the words, especially the image of a river. I was less concerned with the sound of a rolling river than with its life-affirming energy-its timelessness. Sometimes the accompaniment flows quietly under the melody; other times it breathes alongside it. The work's mood ranges from quiet reflection, through growing optimism, to profound exaltation. -Program note by Frank Ticheli
An American in Paris George Gershwin arranged by John Krance Four years after the success of his Rhapsody in Blue in 1924, George Gershwin began work on his tone poem An American in Paris while touring that city and meeting musical luminaries such as Milhaud, Ravel, and Poulenc. Upon his return to New York, he made his conducting debut before an audience of 15,000 at Lewisohn Stadium on a program that included both of these works. -Program Note by Californian Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Wind Orchestra concert program, 17 May 2003.
Emperata Overture Claude T Smith Emperata Overture was written by Claude T Smith in 1964. It was his first published piece for wind band. Smith created a whole new unique style of wind band literature. Many elements of that unique style are used in this piece: mixed Meter, woodwind flourishes, powerful brass, and rockin' percussion. There are several main themes that get passed around the ensemble and vary slightly. The themes all come together in the end for a grand finale.
About the Tri-State Community Band
The band began 42 years ago as the Toronto High School Alumni band, years later was renamed The Toronto Community Band, and now, since the members hail from all over the tri-state area, the band is known as The Tri-State Community Band. The band is made up of all volunteer musicians from many different walks of life. You will find high school and college students, current and retired music educators, professional musicians, as well as a variety of other talented professionals, such as doctors, teachers, pastors, and nurses, to name a few.
The band typically rehearses on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM in the band room at Indian Creek High School. If you are interested in joining the band, please speak with our director, Zeke Paulowski, or any band member. OR simply join us for a rehearsal. If you currently play an instrument or haven’t picked yours up in 20, 30, 40+ years, you are still welcome. We would LOVE to have YOU!
If you are interested in booking the Tri-State Community Band for an event, please contact: Zeke Paulowski at (740) 424-8381.

To Dance With Storm Clouds Richard L. Saucedo Hal Leonard Grade 2 Written by Richard Saucedo, our opening piece was commissioned for the American School of the Hague, a high school just outside of Amsterdam. This piece features a quick tempo in 3/4 meter and includes a short lyrical section that showcases Junior, Kylee Dennis playing a baritone solo.
High Voltage Randall D. Standridge FJH Grade 1.5-2 Randall Standridge is a very popular composer for young band. In this piece, High Voltage, he musically communicates "the energy and excitement of electricity racing across the sky, across wires, and across the world". Mr. Standridge successfully incorporates the use of a Synthesizer and a set of sound effects to help create the aural experience for both the audience and the player.
Mad Dash Timothy Loest Grade 2 Mad Dash is a contemporary galop written in the style of 1900's circus music. The quick tempo, style, and energy should have you envisioning galloping animals, brightly-colored costumes, amazing performers, and even the faint smell of cotton candy. Originally commissioned by the Lakeview Junior High Music Boosters, the Big Red Concert Band will do our best to recreate an afternoon at the circus for you! If you liked Mad Dash you will Love (click the link for recordings): Entry of the Gladiators-Julius Fucik Barnum and Bailey's Favorite-Karl L. King The Circus Bee-Henry Fillmore
Fuerza Furiosa Victor Lopez Belwin Young Band Fuerza Furiosa depicts the effects of violent forces of nature on the world in which we live. This piece begins with a serene introduction illustrating the "calm before the storm." The intensity of the music increases and dwindles creating the experience of a musical storm. This piece features soloists on Trumpet: Isabella Loy, Sarah Ostovich, and Gordana Vein and Flute: Kasey Crosier and Katie Riley. A Disney March Spectacular Arr. Ted Ricketts Grade 3 On May 7th a portion of the Big Red Band will be traveling to Orlando Florida to march in a once in a lifetime performance at the Magic Kingdom. Steubenville High School Concert Band Call to Victory March Karl L. King/James Swearingen Karl King (1891-1971) was born in Paintersville, Ohio. Known for over 290 compositions, "Call to Victory'' was one of 16 marches included in a very successful book of accessible school band marches known as "Marching to Victory." It has been said that Mr. King was apprehensive to take on this project having already written over 100 marches, however it soon took on special meaning as the escalation of war in Europe began to involve the United States. Today we will be performing an arrangement of "Call to Victory'' by another Ohio native, James Swearingen.
Fanfare for the Common Man Aaron Copland/Robert Longfield Written by Brooklyn native Aaron Copland (1900-1990) "Fanfare for the Common Man" was inspired by a speech made by Vice President Henry A. Wallace, in which he proclaimed the dawning of the "Century of the Common Man." Copland wrote this Fanfare for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1942. This piece has been used in commercials and movie scores all over the world. The arrangement you will hear today is by Robert Longfield.
As Eagles Soar A Fanfare for Band James Swearingen Holding degrees from Bowling Green State University, and the Ohio State University, James Swearingen serves as Professor Emeritus at Capital University. Mr. Swearingen is known for writing and arranging over 600 pieces of music including many popular tunes for the Ohio State University Marching Band. Commissioned by the Charter School for Applied Technologies Music Department, "As Eagles Soar" is written about the eagle, a symbol of our country and their school mascot. The eagle flies through the sky with skill and beauty while also reminding us of our strength and skill. The Light Eternal James Swearingen "The Light Eternal" is based on a well-known hymn GOD OF OUR FATHERS and is based on the story of the S.S. Dorchester. On February 3, 1943, the vessel sank off the coast of Greenland, the casualty of a German U-boat attack. 605 of the 904 aboard were lost including four Army chaplains. The story of the event says, "when the life jackets were gone, they gave away their own." "As the survivors swam away, they remembered the chaplains standing - their arms linked, braced against the slanting deck. They were praying; words of prayer in Latin, Hebrew and English, addressed to the same God." Carpathia Willliam Owens After receiving distress calls in April 1912 the RMS Carpathia raced through icefields to arrive two hours after the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Its crew successfully rescued 705 survivors from the ship's lifeboats and safely returned them to New York. "Carpathia" begins slow and tense, signifying the distress call from Titanic. The music suddenly quickens and musicians create the vessel's massive vibrations and hissing sounds representing the overheating boiler as the giant ship speeds toward the distressed Titanic. As the ship arrives on the terrible scene the music relents to a mournful hymn before intensifying as the rescue ship begins its return voyage to safety. William Owens (1963) is a native of Gary, Indiana and has composed nearly 200 pieces for concert band and string orchestra. American Visions Mark Lortz Embodying the sense of American vigor and patriotism, "American Visions" is a fast-paced and energetic composition featuring rousing brass fanfares, lively woodwind motives, and driving percussion. Mark Lortz is the Director of Music at Stevenson University. The Best of Henry Mancini Henry Mancini/Johnnie Vinson The Pink Panther * Baby Elephant Walk * The Sweetheart Tree * Peter Gunn Born in Cleveland, Ohio Henry Mancini (1924-1994) was exposed to music at the age of 8 by his father who was an outstanding flute player. After graduating high school Mancini enrolled in New York's Juilliard School of Music but was drafted the following year. Upon returning state-side Mancini joined The Glenn Miller Orchestra and later the Universal-International Studios music department. During his time at Universal Studios, he composed for over 100 films receiving his first Academy Award nomination. In 1958 Mancini left Universal and began composing and arranging independently. The Pink Panther was written as the theme for the 1963 film by the same name. The theme was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score, but lost to Mary Poppins, however the single received three Grammy Awards in 1964. Baby Elephant Walk was composed in 1961 for the 1962 film Hatari! earning Mancini a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement at the 1963 Grammys The Sweetheart Tree was written by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer for the 1965 movie The Great Race. While this song is recognized as the main theme and is heard during the film without the chorus, it is performed on screen by Natalie Wood with a voice dub by Jackie Ward. This composition was nominated for, but did not win an Oscar for best song. Peter Gunn Theme Composed by Mancini for the television show Peter Gunn, the Theme from this show won an Emmy Award and two Grammys for Album of the Year and Best Arrangement in 1959.

Steubenville High School Concert Band Power March Harold Bennett, also known as Henry Fillmore was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bennet is known for using several pseudonyms during his composition career so that he would not oversaturate the market. He penned this “hidden gem” in the 1930s. While it is not one of his most famous marches, it is a tuneful 6/8 march that is written in standard march form and includes a rousing break strain.
Spania Spania is an exciting Spanish march written by Ohioan David Schaffer. This piece is composed in the paso doble style. The Paso Doble is a dance that originated in 16th century France. Eventually becoming popular in Spain, this double-step was based on the sound, drama, and movement of the Spanish and Portuguese bullfight.
Man in the Mirror Man in the Mirror was recorded by Michael Jackson in 1987 and was said to be one of his favorite songs. Music and lyrics were written by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett, this song was released as the fourth single from his seventh solo album, Bad
March of the Paratroopers This original March is a great teaching piece to distinguish the difference between duple and triple meter. Our classroom instruction has allowed for much more time to be spent on fundamentals and we spent a great amount of time reviewing and refining counting in class. Besides being a fun tune to listen to, this piece reinforces march style, 6/8 and 2/4 time, and melodic chromaticism.
Ain't No Mountain High Enough Ain’t No Mountain High Enough was written by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson in 1966 and was a top 20 hit when recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in 1967. A few years later, in 1970, the song was released for the second time, recorded by former Supremes frontwoman Diana Ross. This became her first solo number-one hit and was also nominated for a Grammy.

Jazzin’ It Up Harry Richards
As the title suggests, this is an original “jazzy composition by Harry Richards. It features the Saxophone section, comprised of 3 alto saxophones: Jacob Noble, Aiyanna Glynn, and Jordan Sarjeant, 2 tenor saxophones: Emilee Crago, and Rosalind Thacker, and one baritone saxophone: Kandisi Anyabwile, with wind band accompaniment.
Junk Funk Shauffle Kevin Mixon
This piece features the Big Red “Junkline” performing on plastic 30 gallon cans and 5 gallon buckets used by street performers in large cities such as New York and Washington, D.C. At first, these street musicians originally played in a style called “go-go drumming,” which was an early type of hip-hop music. The group Stomp popularized “junk” instruments, and many examples of virtuosic playing can be found on the internet.
No Moon at All arr Scott Ragsdale
Written by David Mann our version of No Moon at All will feature Senior Kaitlyn Gaughan on vocals, Sal Crano, drumset, Rick Hicks, Trumpet, Rosalind Thacker, Tenor Saxophone, and Valerie Stewert , piano as well as members and friends of the Big Red Jazz Ensemble. Originally performed by The King Cole Trio, this piece has been recorded by over 50 artists including Doris Day, Mel Tormé and Ella Fitzgerald.
The Roosters Lay Eggs in Kansas Mayhew Lake
Mayhew Lake wrote John Philip Sousa’s favorite encore when Lake was the chief editor at Carl Fisher in New York City. He and Mr. Sousa were good friends, and Sousa performed many of Lake’s compositions and arrangements. He featured them for many years, and recorded many of them for the Victor Talking Machine Company. This piece features multiple soloists along with the singing talents of the Big Red Band.

Steubenville High School Symphonic Band Rosalind M. Thacker, Conductor
Metrix Robert Sheldon
Metrix is a multi-meter, jazz inspired composition. The infectious rhythms and tuneful melodies are highlighted by the driving percussion riffs that propel the music through a variety of styles, moods, and textures. The title is a play on words combining the words “matrix” that refers to a mathematical array of numbers, and “metric,” that relates to the variety of meters used in the piece. Metrix was commissioned by t he Miller South School of the Visual and Performing Arts, Akron, Ohio and their director, Eric Langreder.
The Rescue Brian Drake
The Rescue is an exciting work written specifically for the Harford County (MD) Middle School Honor Band. The piece musically depicts one person’s attempt to escape captivity and danger while others on the outside seek to free the hero from certain doom. Through determination on both sides, the musical story reaches a victorious climax.
Rhythmata Erik Morales
Rhythmata, as the title infers, is a study in rhythm. The composer’s goal was to emphasize rhythm as the main thematic material. Melodies are not emphasized, but are presented by soloists only. The best description of this work would be a rhythmic etude for band. Percussion, whose part is highly interactive throughout, creates an interesting dialogue with the winds.
Concerto for Drum Set and Concert Band Larry Neek
This drum set feature consists of three connected “movements”: 1960’s Rock ‘n Roll, Jazz Waltz, and 1940’s swing.
Movement 1 is in the style of early 1960’s rock ‘n roll. The inspiration for this section is the drumming of Sandy Nelson. Sandy was a top LA session drummer in the 50’s and 60’s, who played on many hits of the day, including To know Him Is To Love Him and Alley-Oop. At the same time, he recorded his own records, instrumentals featuring his drumming. His most successful singles were, Let There Be Drums, and Drums Are My Beat. Listening: http://bit.ly/1VKtd0s
Movement 2 is based on the drumming style of Joe Morello. Joe is considered by many to t be the consummate small-group modern jazz drummer. Although he has worked with a Who’s Who of famous jazz musicians, he is most noted for his work in the Dave Brubeck Quartet during the 1950’2 and 60’s. Joe is also recognized as a jazz educator maintaining a very active private teaching studio. Listening: http://bit.ly/1lbVJGj
The 3rd movement is based on the drumming style of Gene Krupa, one of the finest, and most famous drummers of the swing era. As a member of the Benny Goodman Band, he developed the concept of the jazz drum solo, with his trademark tom-tom beat prominently featured. Listening: http://bit.ly/1d7ExYO
